Premature Ovarian Failure

When your ovaries give up on you before they normally should.

🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴

🔴 Almost every woman is born with two ovaries.

🔴 These ovaries are responsible for producing female hormones and eggs which when fertilized, can grow to become a baby.

🔴 Usually the ovaries are able to function till one reaches menopause, which is usually around 50-51 years ( this differs from person to person)

🔴 Sometimes however, as a result of certain conditions or for no apparent reason, the ovaries can stop working way before they are supposed to.

🔴 If this happens before you turn 40, we say you have premature ovarian failure.

🔴 Once your ovaries stop working, it will not be producing the eggs you need to get pregnant and the hormone you need as a woman ( estrogen) .

🔴 Estrogen helps control your menstrual cycle. This means that your cycle will be affected.

🔴 Sometimes the reason why your ovaries stop working for no reason cannot be found.

🔴 Other times however, it can be as a result of :

💥 Certain viral infections

💥 Chemotherapy or radiotherapy you once had,

💥 Sometimes it can come with a genetic disorder. ( it can run in families too)

💥 Sometimes the ovaries self destruct ( in response to the immune system. Nobody knows why they do )

🔴 When your ovaries fail before they usually should, these are a few symptoms you would very likely experience:

💥 Your menses can become scanty or irregular.

💥 Your sex drive gets to almost zero

💥 You have vaginal dryness. This is usually noticed during sex.

💥 You might have hot flushes

💥 You might have problems with your mood and concentration. ( depression, anxiety)

💥 Getting pregnant becomes extremely difficult. You become infertile. Sometimes however, very few women are able to get pregnant unexpectedly.

🔴 Premature ovarian failure puts you at risk of heart disease, thyroid diseases or brittle bones because of the lack of estrogen.

🔴 Once you realise a change in your menstrual cycle as described above for more than 3 months or three cycles , its important you get checked by your obgyn.

🔴 Labs and other tests will be done to help in making a diagnosis.

🔴 Once this diagnosis is made, there isn't much that can be done for you to help you get pregnant on your own. Its not treatable.

🔴 You will be offered options in terms of assisted reproduction ( IVF) using someone else's eggs they donated as you might not be able to get pregnant on your own.

🔴 You will also be given hormones and vitamins needed to help you overcome the risks that come with not having estrogen.

❗ Premature ovarian failure can occur after pregnancy or after the usage of certain contraceptives . The fact that you were once fertilite does not mean you cannot be infertile later in life.

❗ Premature ovarian failure is not the same as Premature menopause. When one reaches menopause prematurely , menses stops and pregnancy can't be achieved .

💥 Infertility is not as simple as it looks. Neither is your menstrual cycle. If you ever need help with these two, please seek help the right way. This might save your life and save you lots of stress.
