Sickle cell disease and pregnancy

🔴 Women with sickle cell disease tend to have more crisis during pregnancy.

🔴 They are also at a higher risk of getting preeclampsia and blood clots blocking their lungs ( this can lead to sudden death).

🔴 The problems they have with blood clot formation also increases their risk of multiple miscarriages, preterm birth and having small babies.

🔴 These Women also have a high risk of bleeding, complications as a result of infections and problems with blood clot formation during labour.

🔴 Thus its advisable to have a vaginal delivery if possible, and medication to prevent blood clot formation given postpartum.

🔴 A woman with sickle cell disease has a 5 to 10% higher risk of dying during pregnancy and childbirth.

🔴 If you're Sickle cell positive, choose a healthy partner so you don't pass it on to your children if possible. You will save them from lots of pain.

🔴 If you have Sickle cell, please find a very good team to take you through your pregnancy as you a a very high risk patient.
