๐Ÿ’ฅ Women who have diabetes before pregnancy are high risk and need to be taken care of very well during pregnancy.

๐Ÿ’ฅDuring pregnancy, your body's way of dealing with your blood sugar and the medication you will need to maintain your blood sugar changes.

๐Ÿ’ฅYou need to work closely with your Ob/GYN and Dietitian ( doctor that deals with diabetes ) to help you control your blood sugar and prevent lots of complications that can result from uncontrolled blood sugar.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Poorly controlled blood sugar in early pregnancy ( before week 13) , your baby might not form as it is supposed to. You are also more likely to miscarry your baby if your blood sugar is not controlled.

๐Ÿ’ฅIf you are planning on getting pregnant and have diabetes, you need to begin controlling your blood sugar very well before you try to get pregnant because you're likely to find out after 2-4 weeks that you're pregnant and once anything goes wrong with the formation of your baby, you're very likely to miscarry.

๐Ÿ’ฅIf you have diabetes and pregnant, your obgyn will monitor the growth of your baby and you will be booked for delivery between 38 to 39 weeks.

๐Ÿ’ฅ This usually for all to mothers whether they are on insulin or diet during pregnancy or are well controlled or have uncontrolled diabetes.

๐Ÿ’ฅ You may have to receive insulin ( depending on your blood sugar level ) and your blood sugar levels will have to be monitored during labour as this can be stressful for you and your baby.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Your baby's blood sugar ( can get dangerously low) , calcium and magnesium levels will also have to be monitored for several hours after birth.

๐Ÿ’ฅ If you're on medication and your blood sugar is well controlled, and baby not too big or too small, you will be induced or a cesarean section will be performed if there is a an Obstetric indication before you reach 39 weeks. If you are only on diet , the same applies before you reach 39 weeks.

๐Ÿ›‘Can diabetes have other effects on you and your baby?

If your blood sugar is not well controlled, you can expect the following :

๐Ÿ’ฅ You are likely to have more water than necessary around your baby ( polyhydramnios)

๐Ÿ’ฅ Your baby is likely not to grow as it is supposed to. You are likely to deliver preterm or have a baby with low birth weight which can die after birth. Premature babies have breathing , feeding and other health problems.

๐Ÿ’ฅYou are likely to have a baby with with birth defects especially of the heart and the neural tube.

๐Ÿ’ฅDuring Late Pregnancy, high blood sugar levels in your baby can cause it to have not enough oxygen and can cause it to die a few weeks to days before its supposed to be born ( still birth)

๐Ÿ’ฅBabies in mothers born big because of poorly controlled diabetes are at a higher risk of being obese and having problems with their blood sugar as they grow.

๐Ÿ›‘ If you're a mother with diabetes, dont take things lightly. Check your blood sugar regularly. If you feel it's too high or feel unwell or dont feel your baby like you usually do, see your doctor asap. And work with an OBGYN during your entire pregnancy journey.
