Diarrhoea during menses

🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑

🛑 Having diarrhoea at any point in time is a very uncomfortable feeling that everyone knows.

🛑 Its very common to have diarrhoea during your menses or before your menses.

🛑 If you're experiencing this you're not strange and you are not alone.

🛑 Not everyone gets diarrhoea that comes with menses. Some do ,some dont.

🛑 Usually during that period, there is an increase in hormones called prostaglandins.

🛑 These hormones cause your womb to contract during menses. You usually feel this as cramps. These contractions help the walls of the womb to get rid of its lining, which you see as blood.

🛑 These hormones can also cause your intestines to contract a little more than usual.

🛑 Your intestines work on the food a little less efficiently than its supposed to and food you eat to pass through faster. This can lead to diarrhoea.

🛑 Hormonal changes during menses can also cause constipation and bloating. Whether you bloat , constipate or have a bad tummy can change from month to month.

🛑 Your diet can have an effect on what symptom you will experience during different cycles.

💥How to handle diarrhoea during menses

🛑 Stay hydrated. You need to replace the fluids lost as a result of the bad tummy

🛑 Stay away from foods that make your symptoms worse eg coffee, lots of sugar, dairy products, etc.

🛑 Eat foods rich in fiber and good bacteria ( probiotics) before menses eg vegetables, fruits, whole grains, probiotic yogurt, etc.

🛑 You can take brufen a day or 2 before menses. It usually makes symptoms better.

🛑 Work on reducing stress in your daily life eg exercise as often as possible. It really helps reduce stress and pain associated with menses. Stress can worsen these symptoms.

🛑 If you have anxiety and depression problems, your symptoms might be worse.

🛑 Over the counter drugs for treating diarrhoea might be necessary sometimes. You can ask the pharmacist for help.

❗If your diarrhoea is so bad and you don't get better even with medication, lasts for more than 2 days and contains mucus, you should see your doctor as there could be something else wrong with you.
